Text Box: Can you believe we have already made it through half of first grade? We have had a memorable and rewarding semester teaching your children and can’t wait to see what this semester brings.  This unit in math, we will be improving our math skills as we add and subtract to 18 and learn fact families.  Our students will be finding equivalent expressions for a number, creating and solving story problems, finding missing numbers in addition/ subtraction sentences, composing and decomposing numbers (What are all the ways we can make 8?), and continuing to count on, plan a strategy, solve problems multiple ways, and check our work. At the end of January we will begin a unit on money.
In Language Arts, we will begin Unit 4 titled ’Relationships.’   In this unit we will learn pronouns, homophones, and possessives.  This will last until the beginning weeks of February.  We will also be focusing in writing on how to write ‘responses to literature’.  Please continue to work with your child each night on spelling words and sight words if necessary,  and to read to them or with them for 15 minutes.
In Social Studies we will learn about Thomas Jefferson and George Washington Carver and their contributions to society.  In between studying these men we will explore Magnets!
