Counting Money, Building a Creek Village, and Reading in Pajamas

Yes, reading in pajamas.  If your child has been at New Prospect the last school day before Thanksgiving, then you know about Slip Into Reading.  It is a day for the children to wear their pajamas, if they choose, bring books to read, and a pillow to lay on.  The children will have quiet time to read individually.  We will have parent readers and snacks provided by several of you.  Thank you to all of our volunteers!

We are in the midst of our Math Unit 4—Money.  The test for this unit will be on Thursday, the 19th.  To prepare for this test, please have your child practice counting different combinations of coins and dollar bills to 5 or 10 dollars, depending upon his/her reading group.  The test will also cover counting up to give change.  There is a review sheet coming home today for the children to work on and bring in to class on Monday.  This review packet is similar to what the children will see on the test.

We are wrapping up our second Social Studies Unit on Georgia’s Beginnings.  The children have a review sheet for homework tonight that is due Friday, the 13th.  They should use the online Social Studies book to help complete the guide.  The assessment for the Social Studies unit will be on Monday.  The children will have a word bank from which to choose the correct answers.  We will finish the unit on the early release day with the building of our Creek village.

The next Math unit will be on Data and Graphing.  We continue Social Studies with Unit 3—Native Georgians.  We will focus more on north Georgia, the Cherokee Native Americans, and the early European settlers.

Learning in Language Arts

In Language Arts we are working on persuasive writing.  We are discussing how to convince others by presenting reasons for our views.  The children will be writing persuasive letters the week after Thanksgiving.  We will also continue working on descriptive writing and story writing for our “Bare Books”.

Both reading groups are learning about possessive nouns.  Second graders love using apostrophes, so we need to be sure when it is proper to do so.  We will be visiting the media center for lessons with Mrs. Range on research skills.  We will also continue with our weekly stories for reading fluency and comprehension.
