When William Oliver Medlock (1866-1938) moved to the banks of the Chattahoochee River in 1883, there were no paved roads in the area and the only way to cross the river was by boat or ferry.  Three years later in 1886, William Medlock started a ferry service at what would later become Medlock Bridge Road.  There were many times that the river would swell from heavy rains making the ferry inoperable, so in 1891 Mr. Medlock decided to build his own bridge.  His was the first metal bridge to span the Chattahoochee River and he operated the bridge for five years until Gwinnett and Milton Counties asked to purchase it from him.  His bridge stood 64 years, until it was torn down when the new concrete span was built and opened to traffic in 1955.

Both William Medlock and his son, Robert Medlock, took readings on the Chattahoochee River for Georgia Power.  Robert would see to it that the local schoolteachers would have safe crossing of the river when it was flooded by carrying them over in his mule drawn wagon.  During World War II, Robert Medlock was a rural mail carrier and he would often deliver medicine and groceries to people on his route who were not able to get to town.  He was certainly one of the unsung heroes of those difficult times and Mr. Medlock was always delighted to see the children along his route who would wait by the mailbox for him to visit.

Medlock Bridge Elementary opened in April of 1990 with an enrollment of 547 students and is one of the oldest schools in the North Fulton area.  In times of tremendous growth, MBE has housed as many as 1,400 students, but our population has stabilized with approximately 725 students.

Over the past five years, MBE has lost thousands of dollars in funding from the State and County, even though our enrollment has remained constant. To meet the needs arising from these budget cuts, Medlock Bridge Elementary Foundation was incorporated on January 29, 2007 and our non-profit status was established on July 20, 2007. We began our inaugural fiscal year on July 1, 2007 and have raised over $90,000 in funds and several thousands more in in-kind donations for our school .
